I don’t get angry very often, but last night I got deeply triggered by a family member and I was livid.
So much anger.
My feelings were massively disproportionate to the actual offense. The offense was tiny, but it seemed to reignite every moment of my lifetime I’ve been angry before and the cumulative effect felt unbearable.
Thankfully, I had enough sense to excuse myself to privately work on regulating myself back to a place of calm.
I started with calming nasal breath. Four counts in, six counts out.
And guess what?
IT DID NOTHING FOR MY ANGER.
It was like trying to put a band aide on a gushing wound.
I was still mad mad mad.
So I did what I should have done the first time. I did a round of activating breathwork through the mouth to further push me into fight flight freeze, and a looooooong breath hold. THEN after an extra glorious exhale….I did a round of calm nasal breathing.
I was SHOCKED at how fast I regulated. Going from high charged anger to peace is a really long distance for our emotional body to travel. But when you understand how to work with the nervous system and when and how to use breath to effectively regulate, it can rewire your brain and shorten the time it takes to reach a place of peace and safety.
This is just a mini version of what I do in my live breathwork sessions. You don’t have to be angry to comeđŸ˜‰ ha ha! But it may very well help to release stored anger, sadness, fear, and stress that you have been trying to cope with.
Good news: You don’t have to cope. You can let it go. I’m here to help you.
