How To Get Family Photos With Natural Emotion

Stress.
Uncooperative people.
Maybe a threat or bribe here or there…

If you’ve ever had the experience of trying to take your own family photos for a holiday card or even just the sake of getting something documented, you may have run into a few frustrations through the experience.

I wholeheartedly support hiring a pro photographer, (and these tips will still apply there) but you will inevitably end up needing to take your own family photos at least a few times throughout the year.

I was so delighted to cover this topic for Studio 5 yesterday, and I even share a somewhat embarrassing story of how I learned this the hard way!

  1. I think you hit the nail on the head with allowing the children to take part in the creativity. I know when I allow my children, and my clients children, to make decisions with locations or fun interactions in front of the camera, I am able to capture true emotions! The #1 favorite is making silly faces. We go through the different emotions, silly, sad, grumpy, happy, excited and this makes for some fun images to showcase to the parents in a collage.

On another note, I am thoroughly enjoying your blog and I am enjoying your lifestyle and natural light classes!
