How to know if you are really feeling your feelings or just “thinking” you are…

I’ve been on a kick the past few years for feeling my feelings…

Only the problem was that I wasn’t actually feeling them like I thought I was… lol.

Instead, I was thinking about them.

Can you relate?

To be fair, knowing what you’re feeling is step one.

1 – AWARENESS. (the mind).

Step two though? Requires you to go to the body.

2 – FEEL. (the body).

With this in mind, I absolutely loved the Instagram Reel from _we__love__you that popped into my feed this week. Do you follow them? I adore them. I’m always transformed by their thoughtful, simple messages.

 

So relatable!

If you’re an overthinker like I am, you might fool yourself into thinking you’re feeling when you really aren’t. You’re just thinking about your feelings.

There’s a difference.

The biggest clue I have to guide me in truly feeling, is that feeling your feelings is NOT ABOUT WORDS.
There is no story. There is only sensation.

Feelings are sensations. And sensations only exist in the body.

I’ve been trying to feel with my mind, but that’s not its job. That doesn’t mean the mind isn’t important—it just has a different role. Let me explain how I see the mind and body working together…

FEELING YOUR FEELINGS:

1. AWARENESS(the mind.)
2. FEEL THE PHYSICAL SENSATIONS (the body).
3. NON JUDGMENT & ACCEPTANCE (the mind). ​

The job of the mind is to be aware and to not judge. Then, with self-compassion, accept the feeling.

When you let the mind do those jobs, it’s transformative. When you let the mind judge, obsess, and repress, you get stuck.

In this week’s podcast, I share a personal story about what happened to me last week and how I worked through it in real time. It may sound simple, but it’s taken me 44 years to truly understand this—and now I finally get it. I’m moving through my feelings with so much more ease and grace.
