Your To-BE List

If I wasn’t careful, I could easily give-up.

My to-do list is usually a mile long with some crazy unrealistic expectations.

I often find myself living in a dream world of “as soon as I get this project accomplished then life will be smooth sailing”.

Its taken me thirty years to realize that I am never going to have a smooth sailing life.  It goes against my character.  Having nothing to work on makes life a little boring.

Truth be told, my “To Do List” is typically task oriented.

Items to check off.

A measure of progress and success.

You can imagine then, my pause…

and contemplation

when I read Mike Larsen’s Character Marketing piece“Why do people remember you? I recommend having a “To Be” list. At the top of my “To Be” list is who I want to be and what I want people to remember me as. This comes above my to do list, which defines what I get done. You decide what’s more important for you.”

What a concept?  A “To Be” list?

Could it be that focusing on who I want to become might actually yield better results in life than focusing on what I want to get done?

We are not defined by what we do as much as we are defined by who we are. That is how we will be remembered.

If you’ll excuse me, I need to go work on my “To-Be” list.
