Magic Monday: Remember Relationships

Something that I made a priority for this lovely family session, was to make a focus on “relationships”.  Too often when I photograph a family, I’m thinking only in terms of the larger picture (no pun intended)–the family as a whole.  Though I usually vary up my family sessions to also include time with just the couple, or the just the kids, or even kids individually… I often miss the individual relationships of one on one with parent and child.

This session I intentionally made this a priority. I really wanted to capture the mother-daughter relationship and the father-daughter relationship on a more personal level.

Thinking back on my own life, I’m sure I probably have just a handful of snapshots with just me and my dad or just me and my mom (likely spontaneous with no real care or planning involved and certainly not anything on a professional level), but how much would I treasure those today?  They would be golden.

I think some serious magic happened here.  I wrote to Hayley later that night after I was reviewing through the images and admitted that I had just spent the last hour with tears running down my face as I looked through these shots.  (I normally don’t cry while editing! ) but I just felt something so powerful in these shots.  The power of authenticity and the strength of their spirits.  I don’t think you can really miss it.  As a photographer, I can certainly set up the perfect shot technically in the camera, use the light right, pose well, but the magic aspect?  Thats another realm.  And quite often it has very little to do with me, but more so on THE  RELATIONSHIPS already flourishing.  That says a lot for the character of this incredible family.

  1. These are so beautiful. I think your relationship focus is so important. What I would give for a picture of myself with my grandfather, father, mother, or grandmother. A picture of just me and them that showed they had a personal caring of me as an individual not as “one of the group.” Good job!

  2. i have loved looking at all the photos you have taken of this family. you really did capture magic! beautiful.
