Lovely Natural Light

Towards the end of September I taught a super fun Mini class on Natural Light.  Students often ask me how I feel about flash photography, and though I hope that I never give the impression that “flash is bad” (its absolutely not), I admittedly just love natural light more.  Its magical to me.  Its taught me in many ways to be increasingly grateful for my surroundings -such as how the light shines through the golden leaves of my favorite Horse Chestnut tree in our front yard.  I love light.  And I truly believe that learning to understand light is one of the foundational principles of great photography.

As always, I schedule these model demonstrations at high noon, in full sun, with the strong belief that you can get great shots any time of day if you know how to work with the light in your favor.  We covered backlighting, diffused lighting, using reflectors, using natural reflectors, open shade, and catchlights.

Here are some quick favorites from our mini class.  Thanks to our fabulous model sisters!

  1. =) Love your shots! This class is a HUGE part of the reason I am SO excited for Advanced! Your teaching style ROCKS and totally is the right style for me! I totally love the shot by the metal shed. There was some surprisingly pretty light under there!

  2. Good stuff Brooke. I love how you always have a decent variety of shots in your posts. In the shadow, up close, different angle, it’s all stuff that really helps those of us who follow your blog. Keep it up!
