Inspired By Life Episode #4

Definitely worth getting out of the first few hours of school for. ย That’s what they tell me ๐Ÿ™‚

Still Shots

A personal goal of mine for this shoot was to use a slower shutter speed for some photos. ย I always have a tendency to “FREEZE” action and avoid blurry shots. I’m so loving Bryan Peterson’s book, Understanding Shutterspeed, and slowly coming to see the artistic value of not always having things in focus and how that can lend to the energy of a photo. Here’s an attempt at panning at 10:00 a.m. with a blah background (two keys for successful panning shots include less light and better backgrounds…just in case you were wondering ๐Ÿ™‚ )

My favorite shot of the day. ย I might just have to enlarge this to like a 30×40 and hang it in my office to remind me to be happy and carefree each day.

  1. Wow are they gorgeous girls! I love the concept too. The picture of her doing a back bend with the streamers is my favorite. That is a “humble joy” pose in dance. (At least that is the emotion it emits when you do it) so seeing it just makes me happy.

Great job Brooke and great job to your models!

  2. Another beautiful session! I have always struggled with photographing kids running- I get the wrong kind of blur. Some motion blur would be okay, but I get out of focus blur because the kids are moving faster than my focus point can grab. Do you have an aperature that you like for kids running, and do you use one of the special motion focus setting on your camera?

    1. Thanks all! Samantha, I’m panning the shots where they are blurry and moving the camera the same speed as my subjects, so that is why they are “more” in focus than the back ground. I use about 1/30 shutter speed. I focus on them first and then just pan the camera along with them.

  3. This is my favorite of your “Inspire By Life” sessions! These are the kind of images I love to get and need to work more on encouraging them and creating opportunities to get them. THANKS FOR SHARING!!

  4. Very inspiring! I like seeing the position you get in to get the shots. I’m also thinking about getting a couple Bryan Peterson books!

  6. Thanks Melina! that is by far my #1 goal for all my images… to feel something. So happy to know I achieved that in these images ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Love how these turned out, Brooke! Once again you’ve mastered the challenging light. I’ve been wanting to photograph kids/family with kites all winter long … now the time has come. ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. AMAZING!! Great motion shots. You have mentioned that you have wanted to shoot more motion shots and these are fabulous. I sure enjoy your video tutorials. Thank you for sharing.
